Science Week

It is science week the third week of this term (wk commencing 11th March) and we are looking for any parents who have a job rooted in science to come in and talk to the children e.g. doctor, nurse, vet, engineer, dentist, pharmacist. If this is something you would be interested in doing please get in touch with one of us.

Many thanks

PE this term…

Hope you have all had a lovely half term! We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.

Just a quick note to say PE will be on Thursday afternoons. We are very lucky to have a coach from Sheffield United coming in to the sessions this half term. Please can you ensure your child has either pumps or trainers (labelled with their names on) as well as their normal PE kits in their bags. Many thanks.

Islam Week

This week we have been learning about the Islamic faith. We have been finding out about a special person called Muhammad. We have  learnt that Muhammad preached kindness and Muhammad is important to Muslim people. We went on a little walk in our gardens and talked about how we can look after living things. We also made prayer mats and looked at  examples of some and discussed the tessellating patterns.

Farah came into school to talk to us about the Islamic faith. The children prepared for her coming by writing down all the questions they had been wondering about.

Mary Anning

Yesterday, it was ‘women and girls in science’ day. To celebrate this we have been learning about the famous scientist, Mary Anning. We learnt a bit about her life and how she discovered lots of different fossils. We also talked about what fossils are.

We then had a go at making our own fossils, lots of dinosaur activities and the Year 1s wrote about Mary Anning too.

Bun Sale – Friday 8th February

Just to remind our parents that we will be holding our bun/cake sale on Friday straight after school. We would really appreciate any contributions of cakes or buns, all the money will go to St.Luke’s Hospice as part of our School Parliament’s fund raising project. Many thanks.

Our Fun Map Work…

As part of our topic, we have enjoyed creating maps with keys of Millhouses Park and our dream park! We have used compass points and keys to help us with our mapping skills.

The year 1 children loved our  trip to Millhouses Park, on our way down we had to find different points of interest and identify them on our sheets. We were so proud of how smartly and sensibly the children walked to the park, especially crossing the roads. When we arrived, we mapped out the park using a key before having a play and having an ice lolly. Thank you so much to the parents who came and helped us.

During the week, we then worked as teams to make our own 3D map of the park. We are so proud of the children as they worked so well together, great team work!

In the near future, our reception children will be visiting our local woods and using their mapping skills to plan the route to our school woods.

Homework Year 1

Spellings this week are: out, little, want, came, about.

The video and activities on the maths with parents website remain the same on problem solving. We have also been doubling this week and finding near doubles so if you would like to ask your child how they add near doubles (e.g 7+8) together that would be great.

Thank you for your support.

Just to remind you that Mrs Goodchild’s class will be doing a cake sale after school today to raise money for St.Luke’s Hospice.

Our cake sale will be next Friday (8th February), it would be really appreciated if you can buy or bake a few buns/cake for our class to sell. Many thanks.
